Why Hokkaido snails have moved to treetops

Over two weeks of observations, the population of snails living in the crowns suffered half as much as individuals remaining on the ground.

It is noteworthy that the humidity at the tops of the trees reached a comfortable 80%, which allowed the snails to switch from feeding on fallen leaves to epiphytic lichens and mosses growing in the crowns.

The authors of the study concluded that an arboreal lifestyle increases the chances of survival of E. b. sapporo snails and is associated with food availability. In the tropics, there are species of snails that are fully adapted to life in trees, using humid air and an abundance of food resources.
